UVW’s Spanish school, La Escuela, was born out of the understanding that learning a second language is key to building solidarity and worker power.
One of the biggest barriers migrant workers face to knowing their rights is the language barrier, and while it is crucial that our Spanish-speaking members learn English to overcome this, at times it is also necessary that they be able to speak and be heard in their own voice.
Because sometimes speaking Spanish is as necessary as direct action and it is only by understanding your compañerxs that you can join them and fight together.
This is why are encourage all non-Spanish speaking UVW members to sign up to La Escuela!
At La Escuela, Spanish is taught in a relaxed, friendly, and informal environment, where no one lesson is the same and learning is blended with political education and lessons on the history and culture of the Hispanic World.
We offer Elementary, Beginner and Intermediate courses, all courses run for 10 weeks.
We ask students to make a £3 donation per class, but if you can’t afford this then we are happy to try and work something out.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic classes have been entirely Zoom based, but as restrictions ease, we plan to mix online with face-to-face teaching.
There are no entry requirements! You do not have to have taken a previous class to enrol, you just need to be a UVW member.
