Jamaican LSE heroines visiting Brazil

Beverley and Mildred, Jamaican grandmothers and leading organisers of our epic LSE campaign, have travelled to Rio de Janeiro this weekend to share their experiences with Brazilian workers. Louisa Acciari, UVW member/activist and native Portuguese speaker, has accompanied them.

The bubbly pair have a steely side that helped win in-house status for over 250 outsourced cleaners and service workers at the London School of Economics in 2017. That stunning victory brought all employment terms into line with LSE’s esteemed professors — with the same sick pay, paid leave, maternity & paternity pay, and pensions!

They are invited to speak at a seminar (“Dignified Work and Equal Rights”) organised by domestic workers of the state of Rio and funded by the NGO Fundo Elas, the black feminist organisation CRIOLA, and the Brazilian Unified Central of Workers (CUT).

During the 3-day event, they will share and learn organising/campaigning techniques, and build alliances with social movements. Hopefully we’ll have videos to share next week…
