Football for the people

UVW took part in the second Strike Solidarity Tournament on 25th of June organised by a coalition of community football teams Queerspace FC, Deptford Ravens and Clapton CFC, held at Clapton’s historic Old Spotted Dog ground.

It was a great day, with lots of football, sun, cheering and dancing. UVW played against Queerspace FC, Renaissance FC and Outsiders United in the group stage.

The matches were tough, especially in the heat, but some great runs up the wing from Alex and Gianna, and some brilliant defensive blocks by Peter and impressive saves in goal by Matt saw us ultimately go through to the finals second in our group! After a break for a BBQ (and some beers) we combined with London Renters Union to play for third place, and were just beaten by the brilliant Ex Girlfriends FC, after an impressive finish by their striker.

4th place finish isn’t bad though – we’ll be coming for the title next time!

A special shout out is due to player of the tournament, our member Peter, a worker at Great Ormond Street Hospital, who came to the football tournament from a nightshift with only two hours sleep. Peter played all four UVW games and headed to another nightshift the same day.

A huge thank you to all the comrades that played, supported and to the organisers.

Together, we raised £1047 which will all go directly to UVW’s Strike Fund.
