No pasarán – Celebrate the Battle of Cable Street’s 90th Anniversary with UVW! ✊
UVW is calling on all of us – our members, friends, and comrades – to come together for a day of action and commemoration.
The Battle of Cable Street is one of the biggest victories against fascism, where community resistance and resilience were on full display. On Sunday 4th of October, 1936, the far-right British Union of Fascist (BUF) intended to march through London’s East End to Whitechapel. However, 100,000 Jewish residents, trade unionists, Irish dockers, communists and other working-class communities organised and rallied to block the fascist incursion. They united under the chant “They Shall Not Pass” – an adaptation of the phrase “No Pasarán!” chant used by republican fighters in the Spanish Civil War – as they demanded for the BUF retreat.
With this history feeling closer to us than ever, we’ll take to the streets once again to honour their courageous fight and renew our commitment to building working-class power against the far right.
