UVW activists inspire colorful portraits

“It’s the first time I’d done this kind of drawing and it gave me confidence. I’d come again!” – Irene Andrango, cleaner and UVW member

UVW members came together on Saturday February 15 for a lively and creative figure drawing workshop at Casa UVW, producing vibrant portraits of each other in a space filled with solidarity and artistic expression.

The free workshop was led by UVW members and artists Ella Jones and Sarah Finke who guided participants through a fun and accessible session aimed at building confidence and self-expression. The event encouraged workers to share their experiences as precarious workers and union activists while creating a series of original artworks. These pieces will be featured in the upcoming UVW May Day Art Exhibition.

Irene Andrango, a UVW member and cleaner, said she loved the workshop: “It’s the first time I’d done this kind of drawing, and it gave me confidence. I’d come again!”

The event forms part of a broader initiative to bring together art and activism, using creativity to highlight workers’ struggles and build connections within the union.

Stay tuned for future art workshops and events and be part of the next artistic celebration of UVW members’ stories and experiences! No experience is needed, and all materials are provided.
