Dear Vicky and Zack, I’m writing to you to condemn the disgraceful pay and working conditions of your bar staff at Saint James Tavern, in Brighton, and to ask you to redress their multiple grievances as a matter of urgency. Your team are on low-wage and irregular contracts; they are highly exposed to Covid-19 sickness but have no sick pay to cover their absences, and they feel vulnerable because there is no security in the pub at all times. The bar staff also claim they have been subjected to mistreatment for a long time, and some of them are suing you through a tribunal claim for alleged harassment and discrimination, including allegations of transphobia, sexism and anti-Semitism. This is even more shocking as it’s happening in the heart of Brighton, known for its diversity, openness and progressive attitudes. It’s unacceptable that your staff are working in such appalling conditions. Being underpaid and under-valued is not ‘ just part of the job”. Furthermore, I understand you refuse to recognise their union United Voices of the World, UVW as their workplace representative. You have a duty to protect your staff’s physical integrity and mental health. Your staff have a right to feel safe and valued as well as to be represented by a trade union of their choice. I urge you to put an end to this situation. I call on you to respect your workers’ wishes and voluntarily recognise UVW as SJT workers’ trade union for the sake of harmonious labour relations and your staff’s wellbeing. Please ensure that the workers are given a pay rise, proper contracts with decent conditions, union recognition and the respect they deserve in their workplace. Yours sincerely,
