I write to urge you to reconsider the decision to dismiss Janet Olufunke Damiro, a 70-year-old Nigerian grandmother and cleaner at London School of Economics for over 13 years.

Janet’s dismissal over what was clearly a forgetful and isolated mistake is deeply unjust and appears to reflect racial and class-based bias.

Janet is widely respected for her integrity and strong work ethic; this is not based on one or two opinions—72 of her colleagues have signed a statement affirming her character. Additionally, three of her supervisors confirm that she has never faced any issue like this before, calling her a supportive and collaborative colleague.

Despite this, Janet has been treated as if she were a criminal. She was visibly distressed during the disciplinary meeting, breaking down in tears and needing support from her union representative. This harsh response is grossly disproportionate and aligns with broader patterns of racial bias in disciplinary outcomes. Would a white colleague in the same situation have been treated this way? It’s hard to believe they would.

We urge you to overturn Janet’s dismissal immediately and reinstate her. She deserves understanding and fairness, not to be judged by damaging stereotypes and for making a mistake.
