Cleaners at PRIVATE SCHOOL in BLACKHEATH FIGHT poverty pay

The cleaners, who are UVW members, at Blackheath Prep in South London, are now employed by contractor Westgate Cleaning Services. Blackheath Prep charges fees of over 15k a year. Yet the migrant workers who keep the school clean only earn £11.44 per hour.

The cleaners at a wealthy private school in South London are making a stand against poverty pay.

The cleaners, who are UVW members, at Blackheath Prep in South London, are now employed by contractor Westgate Cleaning Services. Blackheath Prep charges fees of over 15k a year. Yet the migrant workers who keep the school clean only earn £11.44 per hour.

With everything from the cost of rent, mortgage payments, groceries and transportation costs rising every year. The measly rate of £11.44 per hour does not cover the essentials!

The cleaners are also angry because their new bosses treated them “like the dirt they clean”.

The lack of notice for deep cleaning work needed in the school holidays has resulted in some losing pay because they have already made plans with their families. To make matters worse, new cleaners are being hired on worse terms and conditions. All the cleaners are on an inferior sick pay scheme than directly employed staff at Blackheath Prep.

The cleaners have a right to family life and they have a right to recuperate when sick without worrying about paying their bills.

Support the Blackheath prep cleaners fight for respect and a living wage!

THE WORKERS DEMAND:

The London Living Wage (LLW) of £13.15 p/h

Pay increase every January, in line with the LLW announcement

A paid 30 minute lunch break for shifts of 6 hours or more

Same sick pay scheme as directly employed staff

6 months notice for all deep cleaning work scheduled outside of regular school opening hours

The same contracts and terms and conditions for all cleaners, regardless of their start dates.
