UVW stitches it up!

This month we finally finished our glorious, and new best-in-the-trade-union-movement, banner, designed with the guidance and support of renowned banner designer Ed Hall, UVW member and artist Ella Jones and stitched to perfection by the Chilean exile community group Bordando por la Memoria and UVW members and supporters.

The banner encapsulates the unique struggle of our community for the rights of low-paid, precarious and migrant workers and beautifully expresses our Latin American roots. Weaving English and Spanish language, we remind the world we want and deserve a decent wage, dignity and respect at work and we are here to stay!

The Chilean embroiderers added their famous ‘arpillera’ stitches, a style used by Chilean women to denounce the atrocities of the Pinochet dictatorship and remember the disappeared. With these stitches, UVW pays homage to their cause and memory as well.

Appropriately our banner is going on its first outing on 1 May to celebrate International Workers’ Day in style. Look out for it alongside our classic yellow flags and banners to join us at the march, which will depart at around midday from Clerkenwell Green.
