“I cried because I felt powerless.” Mitie Cleaner wins 2 year battle for dignity and respect

You can also read this story in Spanish or Portuguese.

A Colombian cleaner who battled for over 2 years against workplace abuse and bullying has won a pay rise and has sent news to UVW that she has now bought her dream home.

Anacelli Murillo has worked as an employee of Mitie Cleaning and Environmental Services in Romford for over 10 years. After raising several complaints, she worked with her fightback union to secure workplace investigations and the removal of managers.

With new managers in place and a new home, Anacelli reflected,“It was not an easy fight and I cried because I felt powerless. I had previously raised concerns with another union but felt that because of my lack of English, they couldn’t help me. My colleagues warned me that my managers would try and get rid of me. But I kept going. I believe that we are all important’ regardless of job title. I just wanted to be respected and paid correctly so that I could buy my home.”

Anacelli added, “God sent UVW to help me.”

Celina Donda, UVW caseworker who supported Anacelli throughout said: “Anacelli is a fighter and her victory is inspirational. She has always spoken of her dream to buy a house and I am very happy this is now a reality”.

Celina continued: “The final outcome couldn’t have been a better one and it definitely sets a precedent. I urge all workers facing similar issues, to demand respect. Together we can make sure all workers have dignity, equality and respect at work, regardless of their nationality, gender, or background.”

Just like Anacelli there are workers up and down this country fighting back against abusive managers, poverty pay and discrimination. Share this story. Spread the word about fightback and if you think your right at work are being trampled get in touch here.
