As 2024 ends, United Voices of the World (UVW) looks back on a year of remarkable achievements in worker-led action, creativity and union building. From picket lines to workshops, the UVW family has demonstrated the power of collective action.
UVW welcomed 1,400+ new members this year, with a significant number joining from sectors such as cleaning, catering, security, care, retail, hospitality, legal services, and the arts. This growth has strengthened UVW’s ability to fight for fairer workplaces, fueling 17 active disputes involving over 550 members. These struggles were supported by 9 strike ballots and 25 days of strike action as UVW members boldly took their demands to the streets.
Building confidence and skills remained a priority in 2024. UVW offered 16 free English language classes and 12 free digital skills workshops, equipping members to thrive both in and beyond the workplace. Creativity flourished as members participated in two art workshops, producing posters and artworks showcased on picket lines and exhibitions and 24 drumming workshops kept spirits high. Members even got moving with a lively aerobics class. All courses were free for members.
UVW strengthened its foundation through six trade union workshops on topics like workplace organising, recognition agreements and representation training. Sector-specific support saw seven meetings for key industries like care and legal services, and UVW’s first-ever 4-day week workshop explored new horizons for labour rights.
Members shared experiences and strengthened ties in 48 new members’ lunches and five Café Consultas. We also hosted six unforgettable parties starting the year with our epic 10-year anniversary celebration.
UVW’s campaigns dominated the media in 2024 with over 100 news stories gaining coverage at local, national and international levels. From the viral “Tunagate” coverage to news of UVW’s Harrods strike reaching as far as the tiny Pacific Ocean island of Guam! The union’s influence was felt worldwide. On social media, UVW’s presence soared, with 100,000+ post reach on Facebook, 80,000+ accounts reached on Instagram and 1,000+ new followers on X (formerly Twitter). UVW also made its debut on the new platform BlueSky, expanding its digital reach.
From picket lines to legal victories, from creative workshops to strike ballots, UVW members have shown what’s possible when workers unite.
Here’s to another year of solidarity, action, and growth!
