UVW is back on Facebook!

Our page has been restored – and we’ve recovered our 13,000 followers – after being unpublished by the social media giant without any justification or warning.

Facebook abruptly unpublished UVW’s page without any prior warning, reason, or right of appeal in late June, but we appealed and eventually the decision, which would have erased a decade of predominantly Black, brown, and migrant workers’ voices and a treasured archive spanning over 10 years of UVW’s work and activities, was reversed.

Facebook’s suspension was particularly worrying as it followed X/Twitter deleting UVW’s account in January 2024, silencing our voice and hindering our efforts to advocate for workers’ rights. Despite there being no justification for this deletion, X/Twitter has refused to reinstate our page, leaving us without a crucial platform to share our message and engage with our community. UVW had over 20,000 followers on X/Twitter and used the social media platform to rally support for our actions and raise tens of thousands of pounds to support the strikes of predominantly migrant workers.

With UVW operating on a shoestring budget, all platforms are crucial for amplifying the voices of low-paid, migrant, and precarious workers and for mobilizing support for their struggles for dignity, equality, and respect. However, as we are unable to pay for ‘business ‘social media accounts to guarantee service, what has happened to our free accounts shows the need for the workers’ movement to move away from corporate-owned social media platforms.

UVW is committed to seeking justice and visibility for our members and will continue to fight against this unwarranted suppression of our voice. We remain concerned about the precedent these actions set for the future of digital campaigning.

Follow us while you can on the following social media networks: InstagramTikTok and YouTube! as well as as our new X/Twitter account.
