CANCELED due to VICTORY: Daily Mail protest: solidarity with cleaners living wage strike

PROTEST IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE DAILY MAIL'S MIGRANT CLEANERS WHO ARE CURRENTLY BEING BALLOTED FOR STRIKE ACTION TO WIN A LIVING WAGE

It is a supreme irony that Daily Mail - a paper which is renowned for railing against migrant workers for allegedly stealing so-called 'British' jobs is written in offices that are kept spick and span by a 100% migrant workforce which stem mainly from Latin America Africa and the Caribbean.

The Mail also loves blaming migrants for depressing wages and yet they choose to pay their cleaners, through the contractor MITIE, £7.50 per hour which is the absolute minimum that is legally possible and a wage that keeps the cleaners in poverty. That's why the cleaners are demanding a pay rise to the London Living Wage of £10.20 per hour.

Through their union United Voice of the World the cleaners have given notice of their intention to ballot for strike action. This is the first time that there will be a cleaners strike at the Daily Mail, and perhaps even the first time there will be a strike of any group of workers at the Daily Mail.

Despite giving the Daily Mail and MITIE multiple opportunities to sit down and resolve this dispute through dialogue, they have chosen to ignore the cleaner's demands and instead they have sent in the manager of the contractor MITIE who threatened to sack all the cleaners if any of them ever strike. That threat was in gross violation of their trade union and human rights.

This dispute makes it crystal clear: those who are really responsible for low wages are not migrants, but rich employers like the Daily Mail, whose editor Paul Dacre received a whopping £2.37 million in remuneration last year, a 50% increase on the year before.

If you would like your union branch or organisation to support this protest or have someone talk at it then please do get in touch.

Please join us in solidarity.
